The City of Minot will celebrate National Public Works week from May 19 to 25, including an open house at the Public Works Building.

The open house is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, from 2 to 7:30 p.m. in the Public Works Building at 1025 31st St. SE. The department’s various pieces of large and small equipment will be on display, and there will be a sewer televising demonstration. One of the department’s snow plows will be painted white, and visitors are encouraged to sign the plow or add their own art work.

Hot dogs, chips and water will be served while supplies last.

“This is an opportunity for us to share with the public some of the things we do on a daily basis and to let them see first-hand the various pieces of equipment we use to do our jobs,” Public Works Director Dan Jonasson said. “There are so many different departments that make up Public Works, and our employees have a wide variety of responsibilities. This open house allows us to showcase all of our departments.”

The open house includes giveaways and prize drawings, with the grand prize for one student being picked up by a garbage truck and taken to school on Thursday, May 23.

“This will be a fun way for a student to end the school year. Who doesn’t want to ride to school in a garbage truck?” Jonasson said.

The American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week since 1960 to educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives, including planning, building, managing and operating the heart of their local communities to improve everyday quality of life.
