Cody Redfern, Minot, charged with assaulting police officer, possession of stolen property

Cody James Redfern, 27, Minot, is accused of striking and injuring a police officer early on Wednesday while fleeing from police on a stolen mountain bike.

Redfern is charged in district court in Minot with Class C felony simple assault on a police officer, Class A misdemeanor theft, and Class B misdemeanor refusal to halt.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, the Loaf N’ Jug Convenience Store on North Broadway reported a male shoplifter at 12:26 a.m. Wednesday who had left the store.

Redfern, who later turned out not to be the shoplifter, was spotted in the area walking toward the mountain bike and then spotted again fleeing from police. Minot Police Department Senior Officer Joshua Noyes exited his patrol vehicle in an attempt to tackle Redfern off his bike, but Redfern veered around the patrol vehicle and continued trying to elude the officer. As Noyes rounded the rear passenger side of the vehicle, he realized the bike was going too fast for him to tackle Redfern. Noyes put out his right arm to distance himself from the bike and Redfern struck him with part of the bike and spun him around, causing Noyes to fall to the ground and scrape his left knee on the bike and/or roadway. According to the affidavit, Noyes had bleeding road rash on his left knee cap and he jammed his right ring finger. Redfern continued to flee and did not stop even after Noyes had flashed his spotlight at him, blocked his route with the patrol car and knocked Noyes to the ground with his bicycle.

Redfern was caught and detained by other officers.

Redfern apologized to the officer for hitting him with the bike and ripping his pants.

The mountain bike turned out to be stolen, according to the affidavit.
