Baby dik-dik joins inhabitants at Roosevelt Park Zoo

Submitted Photo This baby dik-dik was born in March at Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot.

Minot Roosvelt Park Zoo’s population is growing. On March 25, a male dik-dik was born at the zoo.

Zoo visitors will be able to see the baby dik-dik, a small antelope, today when the zoo begins its summer hours from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Keeper chats will start today at the zoo (three are planned at various times) along with the opening of the giraffe feeding station at 2 p.m., weather permitting.

The young male, officially Kirk’s dik-dik, joins the three adult dik-diks at the Minot zoo.

Adult dik-dik’s weigh 10-15 pounds and are 14-16 inches in height to shoulder, according to zoo information. A nocturnal animal native to eastern Africa, one of their facial features is their large eyes surrounded by a white ring. When frightened, a dik-dik will make a whistling sound through their nose that sounds like “zik zik.” This behavior is how they got their name.

Jennifer Kleen, executive director of the Minot Zoo Crew, said no name has been given to the young dik-dik yet.

The zoo also has a joey – a baby kangaroo. The joey and its mom arrived at the zoo from the Cleveland zoo earlier this year. The joey has just begun making appearances for Minot zoo visitors.

Kleen said zoo staff are on “baby watch” right now for newborns from the zoo’s hooved inhabitants.

The zoo has some major events planned for the month of May including May 12, Mother’s Day when moms can visit the zoo for free; May 17, Endangered Species Day; and May 29, World Otter Day.

Starting at $2.99/week.
