Hearing continued for Jesse Azure, Belcourt, in attempted murder case
A preliminary hearing for attempted murder suspect Jesse Azure, 24, of Belcourt, has been continued until April.
Azure told Judge Doug Mattson at a hearing on Thursday that he does not want defense attorney Andrew Schultz to represent him. Azure will apply for a public defender.
Azure is accused of entering a relative’s southwest Minot home on Jan. 29, stabbing her multiple times with a knife. He then turned and charged a man in the residence who had heard the woman screaming for help and run into the room where he saw Azure standing over the woman with the knife. The man was able to move out of Azure’s way and Azure then fled the scene in the woman’s motor vehicle. He was caught near the Ward County Courthouse a short time later.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, the victim does not know why Azure attacked her and said there was no conflict between them. Police found the woman in the dining room of her residence, holding her stomach, and with blood on her head, torso, and back. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and was listed in stable condition after the incident.
Azure is charged with Class A felony attempted murder, Class C felony terrorizing, and Class C felony theft in district court.
A new hearing date has been scheduled for April 11 before Judge Doug Mattson.
