Lake Sakakawea declared frozen
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially declared Lake Sakakawea completely frozen on Saturday, Jan. 12. This past open water season was 272 days long as the Corps declared Sakakawea completely ice free on March 27, 2018.
The shortest season of ice on the big lake occurred in 2012 when Sakakawea froze on Jan. 18 and opened up on March 27, a span of just 69 days.
