Woman sentenced for stealing puppy from pet store

A 25-year-old Berthold woman stole a puppy from Pet Parade in Minot on Tuesday evening.

Tori Jean Francis pleaded guilty to Class A misdemeanor possession of stolen property in district court in Minot on Wednesday, according to court records. Judge Gary Lee sentenced her to 10 days in jail, all suspended except for the one day she served, and 360 days of unsupervised probation. She was ordered to stay away from the Pet Parade Store and to pay $325 in court costs.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, there is surveillance video showing Francis carrying the puppy out of the store. A short time after the owner of the store reported the theft Tuesday evening, someone else called police. The caller said Francis had taken the puppy and that she could be found at her boyfriend’s house in southwest Minot. Francis initially said she didn’t take the dog, but eventually admitted that the dog was in the basement at her boyfriend’s house. Police recovered the dog and returned it to the pet store. The puppy, a Shih Tzu-Bichon-Yorkie mix, according to an employee at the Pet Parade, was being sold for $599.
