Megan McCarthy, Jaedyn Dockters, Jayce Zuern and Kolby Bennett from Hazen High School won the second round of the #ShowYourEnergy competition for students in the Grades 7-12 category, while Madison Wood, Nora Harrington and De’Vyon Kehr of Lincoln Elementary in Bismarck won the contest in the Grades 1 through 6 category, according to a press release.

Both groups won $150 and will advance to the final round of judging where they have an opportunity to win a $1,500 grand prize, which will be presented at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference in May 2018.

McCarthy, Dockters, Zuern and Bennett are members of Chris Harvey’s video production class, which also won the first round. The students’ videos focused on how petroleum is a feedstock for the equipment of our favorite sports.

“The Show Your Energy Video Contest was a great way for my students to dig deep into a subject and gain a greater understanding of the role that the energy industry plays in North Dakota’s economy,” said Harvey in a press release. “Prior to completing this project, my students didn’t understand how petroleum product affect their everyday lives.”

Wood, Harrington and Kehr showcased their problem-solving and critical thinking skills through a skit that depicted an accident on a derrick that led the students to devise better safety practices. The students were members of John Olson’s fifth-grade class, which submitted several videos, some of which even involved the use of a green screen.

#ShowYourEnergy was launched by Gov. Doug Burgum as part of Energy Awareness Month in October to raise awareness about energy by focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics program. This campaign is designed to fulfill several of North Dakota’s educational standards, making this a great way for teachers to incorporate fun, creative, hands-on activities into their regular lesson plans. Winners will be chosen during three grading rounds to receive prizes.

One submission in each category (Grades 1-6 and Grades 7-12) will be chosen based on a grading rubric. Winning videos from each round will receive $150 and will continue on to the finals. One video from the finals in each category will be chosen for the grand prize of $1,500 for the class, plus the chance to attend the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference in May 2018 to showcase their video. The final deadline is April 1. The grand prize winner will be chosen from among each round’s champion.
