A man facing a murder charge in Williston was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison by a district court judge in Minot for unrelated May 2016 and December 2016 incidents.
Alex Kenny Eggleston, 27, entered an Alford plea Wednesday to simple assault on an emergency worker, a Class C felony, in May 2016 and guilty to possession of stolen property, a Class C felony, in December 2016. Judge Gary Lee sentenced Eggleston to two years. He will receive credit for 28 days served in jail and four days good time.
Eggleston is scheduled to go on trial Nov. 20 in Williston for the murder of Vance Neset. According to court documents, he shot Neset July 14 in the Super 8 Motel parking lot. A witness said he and Neset had been speaking when Eggleston approached them asking for alcohol and cigarettes. The witness said Eggleston would not leave them alone when they told him to go away. Eggleston walked away, then came back with a gun and shot Neset. Eggleston then fled. He was later located coming out of his motel room.
The incident in Minot involving an emergency room doctor took place on May 14, 2016, at Trinity. Eggleston hit the doctor in the chest, knocked off his glasses and scratched the side of his neck because the doctor smirked at him. An Alford plea means he disputes some facts of the case but acknowledges he might be found guilty at trial.
Eggleston was also in possession of a stolen car on Dec. 30, 2016. According to a probable cause affidavit in the case, the stolen car was found in the parking lot of Eggleston's apartment building in Minot and Eggleston had the keys. Eggleston had dilated pupils and bloodshot eyes when he was arrested and told police he didn't understand his Miranda rights because of "scrambled eggs."
