Camper corpse case ends in plea deal

2 min read

A 40-year-old Powers Lake man pleaded guilty Thursday to Class C felony negligent homicide in the March 2015 death of his older brother.

Aaron Ray Larson had originally been charged with Class A felony murder in the death of 45-year-old Terry Larson. He appeared at a change of plea hearing in North Central District Court in Stanley.

According to court documents, a Mountrail County Sheriff’s Deputy found the body of Terry Larson last September in a locked camper filled with debris on a property in northwest Powers Lake when he went to make a welfare check on Terry Larson. The body had been there for about 5 1/2 months.

Aaron Larson told police that he got into a fight with his brother inside the camper in March. During the fight, his brother produced a gun. Aaron Larson tried to get hold of the gun, but it went off during the struggle and his brother was hit in the chest and fell to the ground. Aaron Larson covered the body with a blanket and put a lock on the camper about a week after his brother died. Their sister told police that Aaron Larson told her Terry Larson had left the property after they had a fight. Aaron Larson told police he didn’t know what to do. He was flown to a hospital in Bismarck on Aug. 22, 2015 and was in an alcohol induced coma. Police interviewed him at St. Alexius Medical Center in September. Judge Richard Hagar ordered a pre-sentence investigation for Larson.

A Class C felony carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
