MOHALL Carole Derr Asheim, 89, Mohall, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at a Minot hospital.
Carole was born April 12, 1925, on the family farm in Chatfield Township, Bottineau County, near Eckman, to Raymond and Edith (Humphrey) Derr. The family later moved to Hurd. She graduated from Lansford High School in 1943.
Carole married J. Vernon Asheim on Feb. 21, 1945, in a double wedding ceremony with George and Dorothy Coleman, at the Strother Army Air Field Chapel in Arkansas City, Kan. They lived in Galveston, Texas, and Topeka, Kan., while Vernon served in the Army Air Force. While Vernon served as a P-47 Fighter Pilot in World War II in the CBI in Calcutta, India, Carole returned to Bottineau and worked at the Bottineau County Courthouse.
When Vernon returned from overseas duty, Carole joined him in San Diego, Calif. Vernon was later discharged from military service and they moved back to North Dakota and started farming east of Mohall in 1945. They continued farming into the 1990s.
Carole and Vernon loved to travel and dote on their granddaughters. They spent many days and nights at basketball games, piano recitals and everything else the girls were doing. Then the great-grandsons came along and she had them to dote on as well. Carole was a prolific painter and produced many portraits, still life and landscape paintings which now adorn her families’ homes. Carole found great joy in sharing her talent with all. Carole hosted an untold number of family holiday dinners. She always kept close track of everything going on with all of her nieces and nephews and they kept good track of her throughout her life.
Carole was a member of the Renville County Homemakers, Coterie Club, Mohall American Legion Auxiliary, Friendly Neighbors Senior Citizens, Order of Eastern Star, Mohall Art Club and Community Art Group, Antler. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall and was very active in church activities. Carole was a history buff and avid catalog shopper.
