Magic City Equality to host Transgender Day of Remembrance

Magic City Equality will host a vigil to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance on Saturday, Nov. 23, on the steps of the Ward County Courthouse.

The vigil, which will begin at noon, will be held to bring awareness to anti-transgender violence.

“Violence against transgender and gender non-conforming individuals is an important issue within the LGBTQ+ community,” the Magic City Equality board said in a statement. “According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least twenty-two transgender and gender non-conforming individuals died due to acts of transphobic violence. Personally, we feel that one is one too many. We hope that with this vigil, we can bring awareness to this type of violence – that it happens and that it shouldn’t happen.”

River Avalon Schilling, who serves as the transgender liaison for Magic City Equality, will be the keynote speaker. During the vigil, the names of these twenty-two individuals will also be read and a bell will be rung after each name. Resources for members of the local transgender community will also be available.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community and the public are invited to attend.

That evening, Magic City Equality will also host a drag show, Night of the Living Queens, at the Grand Hotel. Proceeds from the show will go to MSU Prism: LGBTQ+ Allies, the LGBTQ+ organization at Minot State University. Tickets are $15 and will be sold at the door, which opens at 8 p.m. The show begins at 9 p.m.
