Barktoberfest at The Tap Room to support SVAS

The Souris Valley Animal Shelter is heading downtown to The Tap Room for a German-style, dog-friendly celebration that will help benefit the animal shelter’s veterinary fund.

During the Fido 5k in August, SVAS Director Shelbi Waters and Jon Lakoduk, the owner of The Tap Room, were stuck waiting out rainy weather in a beer trailer. Ideas started bouncing around and they came up with a pet-friendly Oktoberfest celebration to help raise funds for the shelter.

“The Tap Room is one of our most consistent supporters,” Waters said. “Jon has always been generous, and as an organization we appreciate the loyalty, friendship and overall quality of what he offers.”

Barktoberfest will take place today from 6-11 p.m. Admission is $25 and includes two adult tickets for the beer garden with a furry friend, a bucket of five German-style beers and two pretzel necklaces. Single adult tickets are also available for $15. Brats and kraut will be available for sale and entertainment will be provided by Josh Herman.

“Everyone has loved the concept,” Water said. “It’s an easy, social event that requires very little money to participate. I think people appreciate how invested we are in local businesses and like to see us add fundraisers to the calendar to collaborate with small mom and pop shops around Minot.”

The animal shelter is hosting this fundraiser to help replenish their funds in order to provide veterinary care to the pets that enter the shelter during the winter months.

“The winter is when we see some of the worst cases of animal negligence and the cost for care rises significantly,” Waters explained. “This year alone, we will have spent over $40,000 in veterinary care.”

By attending events like Barktoberfest, Waters said community members are directly impacting the number of animals the shelter is able to save.
