Drake Threshing Show set for this weekend

DRAKE – The 57th annual Drake Threshing Show will be held this weekend with parades, tractor and pickup pulls and other events at the Drake threshing grounds. The show opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, with a breakfast. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and a vendor show will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday’s schedule also includes tractor games at 10 a.m., parade at noon, kiddie pedal tractor pull at 1:30 p.m., adult games at 2:30 p.m., bingo at 3 p.m. and full-size tractor pull plus pickup pull at 4 p.m. Sunday’s schedule on Sept. 7, adds a church service at 10:30 ...

Hostfest to offer Meet the Chefs

Norsk Hostfest has announced a Meet the Chefs event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Marketplace Foods at 1930 S. Broadway. The event is free and open to the public. Hostfest is slated for Sept. 24-27. This preview event will offer a sample of the foods the Nordic Kitchen will be serving during the festival. Chefs Patrice Johnson, Stig Hansen and Teena Anderson will be preparing sample dishes, and the public will have opportunities to chat with the chefs, pick up cooking tips and enjoy the lively atmosphere, complete with live music and dancing.

Citywide cleanup set to begin Sept. 8

The City of Minot will hold fall cleanup week for sanitation customers during the week of Sept. 8-12. There will be free landfill drop off and bulk curbside pickup. Crews will not take commercial quantities of construction materials or large piles of tree stumps or branches, concrete, dirt, rocks or bricks. Items should be placed on the front-yard boulevard on the customer’s regular collection day. Crews will begin pickup at 7 a.m., working in quadrants throughout the city over the course of the week. Residents can contact the city with any questions about their collection days.

In a June 1960 episode, Fred Flintstone’s defeat of Ben Boulder in the Loyal Order of Dinosaurs Lodge golf tournament was followed by a yabba dabba dinner of brontosaurus ribs and Bedrock-candy dessert. The game of golf has evolved since the Stone Age but still includes rock-hard spheres shanked and hooked into the woods. I wrote my Grandfather a birthday poem in 1973 that began, “For 80 full years, from buckboards to jets, you’ve seen many things, and I’ll take all bets, there’s much more you’ll do and miracles you’ll see, with someone you love, my Grandma, Bea.” ...
