Outdoors LIFE: Photo of the week: Banded Harris’ hawk

Submitted Photo Thanks goes to Bob Sando, Minot, for this very unique photo-of-the-week. Sando snapped this picture of a Harris’ hawk this past February while in south Texas. A close up of the hawk revealed bands on both legs. Sando photographed a second Harris’ hawk, also with leg bands, and discovered both were banded by a Harris’ hawk research team from the University of North Texas. It turns out that the two birds, one male and one female, were nest mates in June of 2019. You won’t see a Harris’ hawk in North Dakota. Their U.S. range in primarily Texas and Arizona.
