The family must meet certain criteria including income, need of adequate housing, ability to make monthly house payments, be a resident of the Minot area, and willing to contribute 250 hours of sweat equity per adult. The North Dakota State Fair will again help feed North Dakota’s hungry families with its second annual Food Drive. The food bank will be collecting cans on Monday, July 21, at all State Fair gates and will then distribute the food throughout local food pantries in North Dakota. The food drive will be held in conjunction with Pride of Dakota Day and each participating fairgoer will receive $1 off gate admission for that day. Last year, North Dakota State Fairgoers donated 15,700 pounds of food to the Great Plains Food Bank. The Fair is encouraging service groups, 4-H and FFA clubs, and families to begin collecting cans of food now to bring to the Fair on July 21. With an average Monday attendance of around 28,000 patrons, this will make a significant impact on the lives of those less fortunate in our area.

The Fort Mandan Lewis & Clark Farmers Market will open for the season today at its new location in the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center’s parking lot. United Way invites the public to participate in a community shower by dropping off baby items at the Dakota Square Mall between Barnes & Noble and the food court. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., volunteers will collect baby items and other personal care items. The North Dakota State Fair will again help feed North Dakota’s hungry families with its second annual Food Drive. The food bank will be collecting cans on Monday, July 21, at all State Fair gates and will then distribute the food throughout local food pantries in North Dakota. The food drive will be held in conjunction with Pride of Dakota Day and each participating fairgoer will receive $1 off gate admission for that day. Last year, North Dakota State Fairgoers donated 15,700 pounds of food to the Great Plains Food Bank. The Fair is encouraging service groups, 4-H and FFA clubs, and families to begin collecting cans of food now to bring to the Fair on July 21. With an average Monday attendance of around 28,000 patrons, this will make a significant impact on the lives of those less fortunate in our area.

Trinity Health is offering several “Safe Sitter” classes this summer to help young people improve their babysitting skills. The classes, aimed at adolescents 11 years and older, are designed to educate babysitters in crisis management, keeping children safe and secure, and nurturing and guiding a young child. Safe Sitter is a nationally approved, medically accurate training program. During the daylong course, students receive hands-on practice and receive instruction in a variety of topics, including choking and rescue breathing, safety for the sitter, accident management, child development and the business of babysitting. The Midsummer Night Festival will be held at Scandinavian Heritage Park, 1020 S. Broadway, on Friday. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m., with a picnic-style supper served from 5 to 6:30. The meal will consist of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and beans for $3 per person. The City Band of Minot will perform for the flag ceremony at 7 p.m. Other entertainers will perform throughout the evening. Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site will host a “Flint Knap-In” on Saturday, June 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wade Haakenson, Loyd Griswold, Bill Ihm and Marv Becher will demonstrate the ancient art by making flint arrowheads, knife blades and spear points. Area citizens are invited to share input on the future of the state’s oil and gas Legacy Fund at a free dinner meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Senior Center in Velva. Open to the public, residents of Velva and the surrounding area will share a complimentary meal and discuss their vision for the future of Legacy Fund. United Way invites the public to participate in a community shower by dropping off baby items on Thursday, June 19, at the Dakota Square Mall between Barnes & Noble and the food court. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., volunteers will collect baby items and other personal care items. Donation ideas include diapers, baby wipes, baby lotion, baby soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other personal care items. All donated items are distributed to local shelters and food pantries.

The Minot Area Safe Communities Coalition has received a grant to conduct a Town Hall Meeting to discuss and gather input on the issue of underage drinking. The public is invited to attend this informational community forum at First District Health Unit (Door B) at 10:30 a.m. The information gathered will be used in the development of an area-wide strategic plan to address underage and adult binge drinking.
The Minot Air Force Base Fire Department Relay for Life team will host a fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m. at Pizza Ranch. Team members will be busing tables and assisting in the dining experience. Notifying the cashier of participation in the team fundraiser will result in 20 percent of the meal being donated to the team.
The Taube Museum of Art and Roosevelt Park Zoo partner for the sixth annual “Run for the Arts” Race. Registration starts at 6 p.m. in the zoo auditorium. The 5K Run/Walk will start at 7 p.m., with the Museum Half Mile for children ages 4 to 8 and the Museum Mile for children 8 to 12 immediately following. The route will start and end in the zoo back parking lot. An animal-themed silent auction will be held in the zoo auditorium before, during and after the run. The fundraiser proceeds will be shared between the Taube and the zoo. Registration fees for the 5K are $20 for non-members, $15 for members and $10 for children 12 and younger. Strollers are welcome. Pre-registration is encouraged, but you may register the day of the event. Fees include Run/Walk registration, healthy snacks, door prizes and silk screening your own race t-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to top winners in each race. Awards will be presented after all participants have returned to the race start location at the zoo auditorium.

The Taube Museum of Art and Roosevelt Park Zoo partner for the sixth annual “Run for the Arts” Race. Registration starts at 6 p.m. in the zoo auditorium. The 5K Run/Walk will start at 7 p.m., with the Museum Half Mile for children ages 4 to 8 and the Museum Mile for children 8 to 12 immediately following. The route will start and end in the zoo back parking lot. An animal-themed silent auction will be held in the zoo auditorium before, during and after the run. The fundraiser proceeds will be shared between the Taube and the zoo. Registration fees for the 5K are $20 for non-members, $15 for members and $10 for children 12 and younger. Strollers are welcome. Pre-registration is encouraged, but you may register the day of the event. Fees include Run/Walk registration, healthy snacks, door prizes and silk screening your own race t-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to top winners in each race. Awards will be presented after all participants have returned to the race start location at the zoo auditorium.
The Northwest Art Center will host a closing reception for “Out of the Fire,” an exhibit by Minot State University and community ceramists, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Gordon B. Olson Library Gallery. The exhibit features a variety of processes explored during the school term by MSU ceramics instructor Linda Olson and 15 of her students, as well as work by several community members. Many of the works will be for sale. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Parking on the MSU campus is unrestricted after 5 p.m.

The Swedish Heritage Society of Northwest North Dakota will host Svenska Flaagan (Flag Day) on Friday, June 6, at the Scandinavian Heritage Society, 1020 S. Broadway. At 9 a.m., Swedish flags will be displayed with coffee and treats. At 6 p.m., a potluck meal will be held.

The Minot Area Safe Communities Coalition has received a grant to conduct a Town Hall Meeting to discuss and gather input on the issue of underage drinking. The public is invited to attend this informational community forum. The meeting will be held at First District Health Unit (Door B) on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The information gathered will be used in the development of an area-wide strategic plan to address underage and adult binge drinking.
