Vision Zero was started by the North Dakota Department of Transportation in 2018. The Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries across the state through targeted public outreach, school programs and law enforcement partnerships.

According to NDDOT Highway Safety Division Program Manager Kelly Aberle, targeted youth programs remain a critical focus. Teen drivers made up just 5% of North Dakota drivers in 2025, yet they were involved in approximately 21% of all crashes statewide.

Aberle also said that to address these risks, Vision Zero hosted its Driving Skills for Success events this summer in Bismarck on July 28 and Minot on Aug. 5. Designed for drivers ages 14 to 18, the hands-on events provided instruction on avoiding distractions, understanding seat belt safety, navigating large-vehicle blind spots, and recognizing impaired driving hazards.

In addition to teen-focused instruction, Vision Zero works to improve roadway safety through several statewide campaigns:

- ND Sober Ride: Offers resources and alternative transportation options to combat impaired driving.

- Buckle Up Phone Down: Encourages drivers to eliminate mobile distractions and wear seat belts on every trip.

- Vision Zero Outreach Coordinators: Connects regional safety managers with local communities to promote safe driving habits.

- DUI All-Stars: Partners with local sports organizations to honor law enforcement officers who excel in keeping impaired drivers off state roads.

The state's safety partners also gathered May 11-12 at Bismarck State College's National Energy Center of Excellence for the annual Vision Zero Partner Conference, which featured educational workshops, outreach showcases, and an awards ceremony recognizing local traffic safety leaders.

State officials emphasize that while proper seat belt use offers the strongest protection during a crash, remaining fully focused and sober behind the wheel is the single most effective way to prevent accidents entirely.
