Winter is hard on your skin

Some suggestions for taking care of your skin

Eloise Ogden/MDN Brekka Warner, Prestige manager at Ulta Beauty in Minot, said following a skin care system to keep skin hydrated is very important when the weather is cold.

It’s wintertime. Your skin get dry from the cold outdoor temperatures and the air indoors might be dry.

“What we’ve been seeing a lot of is Korean beauty trends,” said Brekka Warner, Prestige manager at Ulta Beauty at Dakota Square Mall in Minot.

Korean beauty, or K-beauty, trends involve multilayering products for youthful skin. A Korean skin care routine usually includes double-cleansing and then using other products including a hydrating serum, exfoliator and moisturizer

Warner said the first step is double cleansing using an oil cleanser to remove eye makeup followed with a cream cleanser.

“It’s just a good way of being more gentle on the skin and really making sure you’re not stripping the skin of the hydration that you have,” Warner said.

She said a person should also make sure they are using a good hydrating serum whether it’s oil or cream-based and following up with their moisturizer.

“Something that’s been really popular, in general, is hyaluronic acid (a hydrating ingredient for skin). Basically what hyaluronic acid does is it draws tons and tons of moisture to your skin so it makes sure all that hydration is held within your skin too. That’s definitely one of the ingredients all the brands are using right now,” Warner said.

She said a mask every week goes along with the Korean skin care trend. “There are a lot of sheet masks being used,” she said. She said the sheet mask is a cotton mask usually hydrated in some type of treatment whether it’s a serum or an essence. “They’re usually used to combat any specific concerns,” she said. She said masks really do help.

“Even though it is really dry, it’s super important to make sure that people are still exfoliating because they do have that dead skin cells on top of their face that needs to be sloughed off before they can really have the hydration get deep in their skin,” Warner said. She said exfoliating’s “definitely a big recommendation.”

She said the skin care system is for men and women including teenagers.

Warner said skin care can be done with lower to higher priced products. She said a skin care system could cost around $30 to $50 with the lower priced products and up to around $200 for higher priced products.

“The thing we have in our store that’s unique is our Dermologica Skin Bar,” said Warner. “We have licensed estheticians on staff. They do facial treatments, they can really work with your skin needs to  get your skin in balance so they can really give you that extra boost in moisture.”

The Dermologica Skin Bar service can range from $10 for a 10-minute customized facial service to a full facial treatment plus microdermabrasion for $82. “It just depends on what they need,” Warner said.

Makeup sessions for customers cost from $40-$50.

As for men coming to the store for skin treatments, Warner said a man was coming to the store that morning for a skin treatment. “It’s not specific to anyone at all,” she said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
