Glamourous nails

Nails are artwork for many people the technicians who do the work and their clients who have their nails done.

Plain polished nails are still favored by some people but others like their nails shaped in ways other than oval shaped and then glamorously polished and often decorated.

Calvin Duong and his wife, April Nguyen, own Nail Glamor, a nail salon at 1944 S. Broadway in Minot.

Calvin said nail colors popular with their customers depend on the season and the person. Right now they’re going into spring colors.

He said they have introduced the stilletto, a really pointed nail, and the almond shaped nail. “Before most people did either square or round,” he said. Now he said some people will have their nails done in the stilletto more popular with teenagers as well as the almond shape and coffin-shape.

Designs on the nails range from flowers to all kinds of other designs. He said a lot of people go on Facebook and Pinterest to get ideas for their nails.

“We can pretty much do almost anything that they come up with that the people bring in here,” he said.

April is the main designer for the salon and can do freestyle designs.

One of the new designs is done with Swarovski “diamonds.” There’s a “diamond” in the middle and other stones are put around it. “It’s most glamorous,” Calvin said.

They do many artificial nails as well as other nails for their customers. He said sometimes people who do not have artificial nails have designs put on their nails.

Nail Glamor in Minot opened in April 2015. Calvin and April sold their Nail Glamor salon in Grand Forks when they moved here. Both born in Vietnam, Calvin has lived in the U.S. since 1990 and April since 2004. He’s lived in North Dakota since 1998.

Besides April, the nail salon has several other nail technicians. By summer, they expect to have about 10.

Along with doing the nails, Calvin said having good customer service and a business attractive to customers is just as important.
