July airline boardings bring ND closer to pre-pandemic level

BISMARCK – North Dakota’s eight commercial service airports posted 92,922 airline passenger boardings during the month of July, the highest level of passenger traffic that the state has seen since the COVID-19 pandemic began, according to the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission.

Statewide, July boardings at the state’s eight commercial airports continued to narrow the gap in running 16% behind July 2019 boarding levels. Hector International Airport in Fargo provided service for 42,871 passenger boardings, which is only 1% lower than its July passenger record of 43,437 that was set in 2019.

Minot’s July boardings totaled 13,283, down 2,671 or 16.7% from 2019. For the year to date, Minot’s boardings of 67,819 passengers are up 43.5% from 2020, although they still lag 2019 numbers by 27,256 passengers.

Statewide boardings are up 35.4% through the first seven months of 2021 over the same period in 2020. Only Williston is recording numbers below 2020. Jamestown is 72.5% ahead of 2020, and its July boardings are up nearly 5.4% from July 2019.

“The July airline boarding numbers have exceeded our expectations and we are excited to see multiple airports within the state have reached or are close to reaching pre-pandemic demand levels.” said Kyle Wanner, executive director of the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission. “We hope that the demand for air travel is sustained and continues to trend in a positive direction as we move into the next half of 2021.”
