New Wiccan shop to launch in Minot in January

Submitted Photos “The Purple Door” will launch online at www.purpledoor.biz in January but owner Selena Drake plans to have a physical storefront in Minot by the end of 2021.

Selena Drake is launching “The Purple Door,” metaphysical shop online on Jan. 1.

Drake, a practicing witch, said Fargo and Bismarck both have shops that sell Wiccan items but there isn’t currently one to be found within 100 miles of Minot, which leaves a lot of practitioners of the Wiccan craft underserved.

Items might be found online but a lot of people like to do their shopping in person.

Drake, who also operates Drake Books and Media in Minot, said she will begin selling items through her website purpledoor.biz and will also offer curbside pickup and delivery to certain locations in the Minot area. She hopes to also move the store into a physical storefront location in Minot by the end of 2021 and has been looking at potential locations.

Drake said the shop will sell candles, incense, crystals, herbs, books, statues and other items. The store will also offer tarot card and palm readings. Eventually she hopes to have a mocktail bar that will serve juicy, non-alcoholic drinks.

Drake said she decided to call the store “The Purple Door” because purple is her favorite color, because purple is a symbol of creativity and open-mindedness, and success, and in the old stories purple marked a witch’s door.

Drake grew up in Minot and said she started practicing Wicca more than 20 years ago because it seemed to make sense. She said she is a “green witch” who works with herbs and gemstones. Other witches might practice divination using tools like tarot cards and runestones.

Drake said the beliefs and practices of witches are as individual and varied as the people who practice them, but most witches agree on the teaching that witches should do as they please as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone.
