Art groups bring Mrs. Roper phenomenon to Minot

By MDN STAFF 2 min read

Caftans & Cocktails: A Mrs. Roper Game Night event is coming to the Carnegie Center in downtown Minot on Saturday, Nov. 7, beginning at 6 p.m.

Inspired by Helen Roper, the iconic caftan-wearing landlady from the classic '70s sitcom “Three's Company,” the event includes food, drinks, games, prizes and plenty of retro fun. Guests (male and female) are encouraged to embrace their inner Mrs. Roper by wearing colorful caftans, oversized accessories and bold fashion choices.

What began in 2013 as a group of people dressed as Mrs. Roper during New Orleans' Southern Decadence celebration has grown into a popular social phenomenon. Today, "Roper Romps" and related gatherings bring people together in communities across the country and internationally, celebrating the character's signature caftans, oversized jewelry and playful spirit. Events range from pub crawls and costume contests to games, parties and charitable fundraisers.

"I've been following the Mrs. Roper trend on social media for a while, and I thought it would be so much fun to bring that experience to Minot. There's something special about getting dressed up, stepping outside your everyday routine, and letting yourself be a little outrageous. We wanted to create a night where people can laugh, connect, and simply have fun while supporting two wonderful local arts organizations," said Ellen Fenner, Minot Symphony Orchestra executive director.

Guests can look forward to interactive games, prizes, food and a crowd-favorite contest celebrating Mrs. Roper. Each guest will receive beads to award to their favorite fellow partygoer, with the guest collecting the most beads earning the title of "Queen of the Caftans."

Tickets are available online from the Minot Symphony website and from Minot Area Council of the Arts. Tickets include general admission, reserved tables for eight and VIP tables for eight. Seating is limited. Attendees must be at least 21 years old to attend.

Proceeds from Caftans & Cocktails will benefit the Minot Symphony Orchestra and the Minot Area Council of the Arts.
