Polar Express tradition brings holiday magic to Bishop Ryan

Wendy Harper/MDN Students follow the conductor, Robert Steckler, through the candlelit hallways during the annual Polar Express event at Bishop Ryan Catholic School on Friday, Dec. 19.

The Polar Express has become a cherished tradition at Bishop Ryan Catholic School in Minot, beginning years ago during one of Principal Tanya Steckler’s first years at the school.

Steckler and her husband, Robert, a BNSF employee, started the tradition to give students a festive and immersive experience tied to the classic holiday film, “The Polar Express.”

Students waited in their classrooms before being led by the conductor, Robert Steckler, through candlelit hallways as they “board” the train and make their way to the gymnasium for treats and a viewing of the movie.

The event has grown into one of the most anticipated days of the school year and has become a favorite among students and staff. Even for those who have seen the movie many times, the experience continues to feel special.

Students in prekindergarten through second grade participated.

Students began the Polar Express trip at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19. Families who planned to attend were encouraged to arrive by approximately 8:20 a.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
