Minot Symphony to present two performances of ‘Holiday Magic’

Guest artists for Minot Symphony Orchestra's “Holiday Magic” concerts include tenor John Swedberg, right, and soprano Megan Kramer, left, both of Minot State University.

The Minot Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will continue its 100th season with two performances of its holiday concert, marking a first in the organization’s history.

“Holiday Magic” will be presented Friday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec., 13, at 3 p.m. in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on the campus of Minot State University.

According to MSO information, “Holiday Magic,” a tradition since 2014, brings audiences together to celebrate the sounds, stories and spirit of the season. This year’s expanded offering allows more families, friends and music lovers to experience live symphonic holiday music.

“‘Holiday Magic’ has become one of our most cherished traditions, and offering two performances for the first time allows even more of our community to experience the joy of live symphonic music,” Ellen Fenner, MSO executive director, said. “We’re thrilled to share this uplifting holiday program as we continue celebrating our 100th season.”

The program features timeless classics, holiday favorites and the powerful voices of area choirs, including Minot High School, Minot North High School and the Western Plains Children’s Choir. Together with the MSO, they will create an uplifting musical experience.

Guest artists for the concerts include tenor John Swedberg and soprano Megan Kramer, both of Minot State University. Swedberg, an assistant professor of music, is an accomplished performer and conductor who has appeared with major ensembles including the New York Philharmonic and Detroit Symphony, and has performed at Carnegie Hall. Kramer, a senior music education major and award-winning soprano, has performed leading and supporting roles with Western Plains Opera and recently completed an apprenticeship with the Oslo Chamber Choir.

During the “Holiday Magic” program, audiences will hear Victor Hely-Hutchinson’s “Carol Symphony” and an orchestral selection from “The Sound of Music.” Additional works include Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Hodie.” The concert also features Dimitri Tiomkin’s Suite from “It’s a Wonderful Life” before concluding with a “Christmas Sing-Along” arranged by Lucas Richman.

Advance tickets are encouraged and are available by contacting the MSO box office at 858-4228.
