Craft of Telemark ski making showcased at Hostfest

Wendy Harper/MDN Tarjei Gjelstad of Telemark, Norway, talks to festival goers about the art of ski making at Norsk Hostfest on Sept. 25.

Norsk Hostfest brought a touch of Norway’s mountain heritage to the State Fair Center when Tarjei Gjelstad, a traditional ski maker from Telemark, Norway, presented live demonstrations of the centuries-old craft of ski making.

Gjelstad, whose family comes from the region often regarded as the birthplace of modern skiing, shaped wood into skis during multiple sessions throughout the festival. He showed audiences the careful steps of handcrafting — from selecting the right timber to bending and finishing the skis, start to finish — while explaining how the practice has been passed down through generations.

Festival-goers gathered to watch the process and learn how traditional skis once connected Norwegian communities to the land and helped them endure winter conditions. Gjelstad also shared insights into the evolution of ski design, from the curved Telemark style to more modern forms, offering context that tied history to the equipment on display.

Organizers said Gjelstad’s work highlighted the living traditions of Scandinavia and gave festival visitors a rare chance to experience an art form that is both practical and deeply cultural. His presence at Hostfest underscored the event’s mission to celebrate heritage through authentic performances, crafts and storytelling.

Norsk Hostfest, known as North America’s largest Scandinavian festival, continues through Saturday with cultural showcases, artisan demonstrations and entertainment.

Starting at $2.99/week.
