Powwows, also known as celebration, on the Fort Berthold Reservation bring together families and friends to celebrate history and culture of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara people.
The powwows or celebrations are held annually, especially in the summer, in each segment of the reservation:
-Little Shell Celebration, west of New Town, in the North Segment (August);
-Santee Lucky Mound Celebration at Parshall in the Northeast Segment (June);
-Mandaree Celebration at Mandaree in the West Segment (July);
-Arikara Celebration and Powwow at White Shield in the East Segment (July);
-Twin Buttes Powwow at Twin Buttes in the South Segment (June);
-Four Bears Powwow at 4 Bears Casino Event Center, west of New Town (May).
Committees plan the powwows for their respective segments throughout the year. Powwow royalty also is part of the events.
Dance events are held for children through adults. Honoring veterans and others are among numerous special events planned during powwows. Family reunions are also held during the powwows.
Other special powwows are held at other times of the year.
Visitors are welcome to attend the celebrations.
