The International Peace Garden celebrates peace and friendship between the United States and Canada.

The nearly 2,400-acre Peace Garden is situated along the longest undefended international border in the world. It is located about 20 miles north of Dunseith on the U.S. side and about 17 miles south of Boissevian, Manitoba.

According to International Peace Garden information, the idea of a garden on an international border was conceived by Dr. Henry J. Moore of Islington, Ontario in 1928. Moore proposed his idea a year later and the National Association of Gardeners approved the plan for the International Peace Garden.

The current site was dedicated on July 14, 1932, with 50,000 people from the U.S. and Canada attending the ground breaking and dedication ceremony.

North Dakota purchased and donated 888 acres and the province of Manitoba donated 1,451 acres along the international boundary line for the project.

The first buildings constructed on the site were barracks to house Civilian Conservation Corps members who created the garden.

One of the most widely recognized hallmarks of the Peace Garden is the floral clock donated by Bulova in 1964.

The Peace Garden continues to celebrate peace and friendship. One of the features of this celebration includes the 9/11 Memorial. Twisted girders from the 9/11 Twin Towers tragedy in New York City rest in the Peace Garden as a symbol of peace and democracy.

The 9/11 Memorial Site was established in 2002 through the work of the International Peace Garden board, North Dakota and Manitoba governments, and Rotary clubs in both countries. An event honoring the anniversary of 9/11 is held at the site.

Among the many attractions and activities at the Peace Garden is the newly expanded Conservatory with one of the world’s most diverse collections of more than 4,000 cacti and succulents. Don Vitko of Minot gifted the collection to the Peace Garden about 15 years ago.
