Audin Rhodes/MDN Four teams toss their cardboard vessel captains into the water for the Minot Park District’s Cardboard Canoe Race on Wednesday. The number of teams in the race was lighter than previous years but the fun was still overflowing.

Minot Park District’s Cardboard Canoe Race at Roosevelt Park Pool was originally scheduled for July 12 but was canceled for safety reasons due to weather. On Wednesday the rescheduled race went swimmingly and was an oar-some way to wrap up July’s Parks and Recreation Month in Minot.

The cardboard and duct tape boats were built to row across the pool in an annual contest judging speed, design and dramatic sinking.

Juan Vadell, outdoor recreation specialist and event coordinator for the Minot Park District, was both the announcer and one of the judges for the event.

Prize categories included Best in Show, Most Dramatic Sinking and Fastest Boat. The Cardboard Barbie Dream Boat won Best in Show; the Flash vessel won Most Dramatic Sinking; and the Snoopy vessel won Fastest Boat.

Winning teams received small trophies, bragging rights and loads of laughs.

Starting at $2.99/week.
