Local students to participate in jazz festival

BISMARCK — Kalen Hill of Minot and Lily Effertz of Velva will join University of Mary ensembles in participating in the 51st annual University of Mary Jazz Festival in Bismarck.

Hill is a member of the Jazz Combo and rhythm musician in the Jazz Ensemble, and saxophonist Lily Effertz, Velva, performs with the Jazz Ensemble. Accompanying University of Mary’s Jazz Combo, Vocal Jazz and Jazz Ensemble at the two-day festival are renowned musicians and entertainers Aimee Nolte, Scott Agster, Adam Meckler, local legend Robert “Bubba” Peske, Greg Yasinitsky, and Kirk Marcy.

The public concert starts at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Belle Mehus Auditorium in downtown Bismarck. Tickets are general admission and can be purchased for $15.

The festival also includes nearly 50 high school instrumental and vocal jazz groups participating in music adjudication on Mary’s campus.
