Minot High Playmakers present ‘Silent Sky’

Submitted Photo McKinzie Platz as Henrietta and Keira Nelson as Peter are shown in the Minot High Playmakers’ presentation of “Silent Sky.”

Minot High School Playmakers will present the play “Silent Sky” Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Minot High School-Central Campus. Doors open at 7 p.m. each night. Admission will be $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and military members, and $8 for students.

The production follows the career of one of the most prominent astronomers many may have never heard about, Henrietta Leavitt. Leavitt was responsible for many of the discoveries that were integral to modern astronomy including Edwin Hubble. As a woman in the early 1900s, she was not taken seriously as a scientist, but eventually gained great respect in the scientific community.

Director Aaron Michels said this is a small cast, and as such requires a lot of commitment by the actors. They are all on stage for very long stretches.

McKenzie Platz plays the character of Henrietta who fights to get the recognition she deserves. Keira Nelson’s Peter is both the love interest and antagonist of the play. He represents the men who blocked her at many points in her career. Henrietta’ s co-workers are Willamena, a motherly woman with a quick wit played by Kiera Palacios, and Annie, a serious woman and suffragette played by Kerrigan Sparks. Henrietta’ s sister, Margaret, played by Gray Jindra. Doesn’t understand her sister’s life, but supports and cares for her deeply.

Starting at $2.99/week.
