City Band performs in concert tonight

Michael HarriSon, principal trombonist in the Minot Symphony, will be performing as trombone soloist at tonight’s Minot City Band concert in downtown Minot.

The concert is part of Arts in the City: Thursdays Downtown. The International Brass Quintet and City Band concert starts at 6 p.m.

The concert conducted by Director David Rolandson will open with the Star Spangled Banner and feature bluesy, folksong and march music.

HarriSon will perform a trombone solo on “Thoughts of Love,” composed by Arthur Pryor in 1939. According to accounts of the day, Pryor performed the piece for the first time to a crowd who stood in awe before cheering and throwing their hats in the air at the finish. Pryor was only 22 when he played his first solo with the world-famous Sousa Band during the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was the first of some 10,000 solos that Pryor estimated he played during his 12 years performing with the Sousa Band.

HarriSon, a 2022 graduate of Minot State University, is City Band librarian and will be teaching elementary band at Minot Public Schools this fall.
