From its first call for entries in 1995, the All Media competition has brought diverse artwork in all mediums, traditional and experimental, to the Minot State campus. This year’s All Media features 61 artworks from artists across the United States, as well as international artists from Canada and Italy. Of note for the juried show is the large representation of North Dakota artists in this years exhibition, from Minot as well as around the state.

The juror for “Americas 2019: All Media,” Sally Jeppson, selected pieces for the exhibit from a field of over 160 submitted artworks. Jeppson, gallery manager for The Arts Center in Jamestown, ND, and former curator at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, has worked in the arts in North Dakota for over 30 years.

“I juried this show with an eye toward exhibition design in a university gallery asking questions like…what would make a good design, taking into account groupings, complementary pieces and themes,” Jeppson says of her process. “And what would offer students a look at different mediums, unique techniques and disciplined execution? Many wonderful exhibitions could have been developed from the submissions.”

Also on display is “Science Inspired Art,” an exhibition of jewelry and small sculpture by NDSU professor of Microbiology and artist Birgit Pruess, co-sponsored by the Minot State Department of Biology.

“It is wonderful to be able to welcome everyone to the campus this fall with such an incredible variety of artwork in many mediums,” said Northwest Arts Center Director Greg Vettel. “The All Media exhibition this year is an exceptional show, and it is great to be able to host a cross-disciplinary artist and educator such as Birgit Pruess.”

“Americas 2019: All Media” runs through October 5. “Science Inspired Art” will be on display through September 20. Exhibits are free and open to the public. Parking in campus lots is unrestricted after 5 p.m.

The Walter Piehl Gallery is located in the Northwest Arts Center on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 1-5 p.m. and by special arrangement. It is closed holidays.
