Healing from grief and loss

One June morning in 2017, I received a phone call from our son at Camp Grafton. A storm with 80 mph winds came through as he ate breakfast in a large tent. Just as he looked up, the center pole came crashing down on his plate, narrowly missing his head. He escaped the tent, ran across a field and took cover in a trailer. A month later, I talked to a friend in Costco. He has a friend who was also at Camp Grafton that day. That friend told him about a soldier that almost died in that storm. His friend couldn’t believe the soldier made it out of the tent as stakes were yanking out of the ...

I am a child of God

Here is Lynette’s story: I grew up attending church every Sunday with my parents and Faith Formation classes every Wednesday. I knew about Christ, but often felt lost when it came to my faith. I could repeat what I read, but I didn’t have or learn a connection with God or how to walk alongside Jesus. My mother passed away from melanoma skin cancer a week after my 14th birthday. I questioned how God could take the one constant in my life; how he could take a mother away from her children? I struggled hard with how to navigate life. Despite the struggles, through age 20, I still ...

How often do we pray for “just enough?” Just enough money, food, cars or success? Aren’t our prayers or at least the thoughts behind our prayers, focused on having a lot of money, food, cars, and success? A prayer with a different focus can be found in the Old Testament. The story begins with a man named Solomon who had just become king. He began his reign by worshiping God. Later that evening, God said to Solomon, “Ask what I shall give to you.” Solomon replies, “You have shown great loving kindness and mercy to my father David, and have made me king in his place... Processing our pain in a helpful way

FARGO — Ignoring the pain, minimizing the pain, overcompensating for the pain, internalizing the pain, and medicating the pain are commonly implemented and universally unhelpful. So, here are five helpful steps to process our pain. These are great steps to teach our children and grand-children. If we can help our children learn them as they are growing up, they can process pain much healthier throughout their adult lives. Step No. 1 is to express the shock and pain. Don’t be afraid to say, “Ouch! Wowza, that stinkin’ hurts!” All pain needs to be expressed in healthy ways. ...
