Officer's on duty death was the result of a heart attack

WEST FARGO (AP) — The West Fargo police officer who died while on duty had a heart attack, his department said.

Forty-year-old Lt. Adam Gustafson died Tuesday afternoon police at Sanford hospital where he was taken after suffering the attack at police headquarters. The Cass County coroner’s office made the cause of death determination.

“Lieutenant Gustafson will be remembered for his contagious smile and laughter, along with his dedication, teamwork and service to the City of West Fargo,” said Police Chief Denis Otterness. “Lieutenant Gustafson has made a lasting impact within our department and he will never be forgotten.”

Gustafson joined the department over 10 years ago and had recently been promoted to lieutenant, police said.

A memorial honoring Gustafson has been set up in the lobby at West Fargo City Hall.
