UND goalie Thome unveils ‘Game of Thrones’ mask

GRAND FORKS — Peter Thome was an avid watcher of the HBO hit television series ‘Game of Thrones.’

So, when it came time for him to get a new goalie mask — University of North Dakota goaltenders get new ones every other year — the junior netminder decided to fill his helmet with artwork inspired by the show, which ended an eight-season run in May.

“Game of Thrones was so big around the time I was thinking about what I wanted to do,” Thome said during UND’s annual media day event in Ralph Engelstad Arena. “I’m a huge Game of Thrones guy. It just kind of worked out. I saw some other masks out there that were doing Game of Thrones stuff. I thought I’d want something cool.”

Jason Livery of Head Strong Grafx did the artwork.

The front of the mask has Thome’s number on it, No. 1.

The right side has a dragon next to the school’s name. The top has several smaller dragons flying around a pair of Fighting Hawks logos.

And the left side has a picture of the Night King, a prominent figure in the TV series.

“I thought the Night King was such a cool-looking character,” Thome said. “I couldn’t not get him on there.”

The back plate of the helmet features the beginning of the Night’s Watch Oath. It says, “Night gathers and now my watch begins.”

There’s also a drawing of the front of Ralph Engelstad Arena on the back plate.

UND opens the season with an exhibition Oct. 5 against the University of Manitoba in Grand Forks. The Fighting Hawks begin regular-season play the following weekend at home against Canisius College.

Thome is one of three goaltenders on the roster alongside sophomore Adam Scheel and redshirt freshman Harrison Feeney, who joined the team last January.

Thome played in 12 games as a freshman and 14 as a sophomore. He played in all of the games down the stretch after Scheel suffered a season-ending injury Feb. 16 at Western Michigan.

Starting at $2.99/week.
