Women’s Hockey: Top-ranked Liberty shuts out Beavers twice in weekend sweep
The Minot State women’s hockey team were unable to find the back of the net in 120 minutes of game action against top-ranked Liberty University over the weekend, falling in a pair of 3-0 losses at Maysa Arena.
The Beavers (6-4-6) put up 18 shots in each game, but Liberty goaltender Alexandra Keith stopped all 36 in the two games to keep the Flames undefeated this season. Liberty, meanwhile, fired 35 shots on net in the opener and another 46 on Saturday. Minot State netminder Jillian Ackerman finished the weekend series with 75 saves.
After a scoreless first period in Friday’s opener, Hayley Lee got the Flames (16-0-0) on the board with 4:30 remaining in the second period. Allison Shaw netted a power-play goal at 7:35 of the third period and Presley Ellis iced the game with a tally in the final two minutes.
Saturday’s contest followed a similar script. The two clubs played a scoreless 20 minutes of hockey, but the Flames lit the lamp in the second period once again, this time off the stick of Isabelle Pelletier with assists from Haley Battles and Isobel Pettern-Shand just 2:19 into the stanza.
Brielle Fussy struck for two quick goals to open the third period, netting the first at 3:16 and the second at 3:46 to give the Liberty a 3-0 advantage. Fussy’s second goal of the contest came on the power play.
Minot State had chances with the extra skater, but its power play finished 0-for-7 on the weekend.
The Beavers will look to bounce back when they travel to Fremont, Neb., for a weekend series with Midland University beginning on Friday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m.
