Majettes tennis continues successful run at West Region Tournament

MANDAN – After taking home the West Region Tournament team title for the second year in a row, the Minot High Majettes girls’ tennis team hit the courts again on Friday to participate in the start of the singles and doubles tournaments.

As part of a two-day tournament, the singles and doubles matches were played until the semifinals were set, with that round and the championships taking place today.

On the singles side of the tournament, Halle Mattson was the No. 2 seed, while Kyllie Fettig was the No. 3 seed, and Sidney Ressler was the No. 5 seed for Minot.

To open play in the second round, Ressler took down Kyla Jorgenson of Century in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The win put Ressler in the quarterfinals, where she picked up another win in straight sets over Peyton Kovash of Bismarck High, 6-3, 6-4.

Ressler’s success on day one of the singles tournament placed her in the semifinals, where she will match up with No. 1 seed Sophia Felderman of Mandan at 10:30 a.m. today.

Fettig opened Friday’s play with a win over Abby Bohl of St. Mary’s, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Fettig’s run stopped there, as Cambrya Kraft of Legacy was able to beat Fettig, 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals.

Lastly, Mattson opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brooklyn Sand of Legacy to move on to the quarterfinal round. In the quarterfinals, the strong play by Mattson continued as she defeated Maria Barrett of Legacy, 6-0, 6-1 to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Mattson will take on Kraft of Legacy at 10:30 a.m. this morning. Creating a potentially fun and unique opportunity, if Mattson and Ressler both win their matches, they will face each other in the championship round later this afternoon.

Still having a chance to qualify for state out of the singles bracket is Fettig, who will face Kyla Jorgenson of Century at 9 a.m. today. A win by Fettig in that round would give her a state bid.

In the doubles bracket, Grace Olson and Sienna Ronning took the No. 3 seed, while Lila Olson and Sabryn Ronning were the No. 7 seed for Minot.

Si. Ronning and G. Olson of Minot opened play with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Rylee Rude and Avy Ator of Williston to advance to the quarterfinals. With a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sydney Hall and Grace Haider of Bismarck, Si. Ronning and G. Olson secured a spot in the semifinals, where they will face Maya Kusbad and Erika Lee of Century at 10:30 a.m. today.

L. Olson and Sa. Ronning got off to a strong start as well, as they defeated Naomi Schuh and Clare Schaefbauer of St. Mary’s, 6-0, 6-4 to move on to the quarterfinals. Their run in the championship bracket ended there, as Kusbad and Lee of Century defeated L. Olson and Sa. Ronning of Minot, 7-5, 6-4.

The loss did not end their run entirely, however, as L. Olson and Sa. Ronning had another shot to go on a run in the consolation bracket. Unfortunately, Ava Dunlop and Ashley Kindem of Century topped the Minot duo, 6-2, 7-6 (5) to advance in the tournament.

Today will be the final day of the singles and doubles brackets at the West Region Tournament, with play starting as early as 9:30 a.m.
