Des Lacs-Burlington earns multiple state titles on Saturday

Adam Papin/MDN Brynn Hanson competes in the 400 meters on Saturday at the NDHSAA State Track and Field Meet in Bismarck. She finished third in the event to go along with her three state titles.

BISMARCK – Des Lacs-Burlington won two state titles on Saturday, as Jaylin Fulin-Ross won the Class B boys’ triple jump, and Brynn Hanson defended her title in the 800 meters on the final day of the NDHSAA State Track and Field Meet.

Fulin-Ross jumped 43 feet, 7 inches, nearly five inches better than the runner-up Nick Hansen, of Sargent County. He almost didn’t qualify for the finals though, after fouling on his first two attempts in the prelims. However, Fulin-Ross was able to successfully complete his third and final jump to advance.

Hanson closed out her meet with a third state title, running the 800 in a time of 2:17.67 and besting Jordyn Thorson of Southern McLean and Madison Johnson of Carrington. The win is the seventh state title of the freshman standouts career, and she almost added another one in the 400 earlier in the day. Running in the event for the first time, Hanson ran a time of 1:00.08 to finish in third place, three and a half seconds behind champion New Rockford’s Kelsie Belquist.

Hanson single-handedly scored 36 points for Des Lacs-Burlington, which was good enough for a sixth-place finish in the team standings. Central McLean took the title with 46 points.

Anya Olson, a freshman at Velva-Drake/Anamoose, finished second in the 100, with a time of 12.34.
