Majettes take third at home invite, add three top 15 finishers

The Majettes and Sentinels were back in action on Friday, however, this time they didn’t have to travel far to participate in an invitational.

A variety of Class A girls’ golf teams came to Minot to participate in the Minot Invitational Tournament, taking place at Vardon Golf Club.

It was a successful showing for the Majettes, who came in third and had three top 15 individuals, and the Sentinels as well, who had someone fall just shy of the top 15 and was able to qualify for state.

“The teams from Minot took advantage of a cool, calm day and their hometown course to play some outstanding golf,” Majettes and Sentinels head coach Scott Foltz tells The Minot Daily News.

Century finished in first place with a team score of 317. Trailing the Patriots was Legacy (334), Minot (338), Mandan (350), St. Mary’s (367), Williston (369), Jamestown (382), Dickinson (388), Minot North (391), and Watford City (432).

In a field filled with 61 golfers, Leah Herbel of Century was the medalist, finishing with an individual score of 73. Behind Herbel and rounding out the top 15 was Anna Huettl (Mandan, 75); Kya Guidinger (Legacy, 78); Hannah Herbel (Century, 78); Mackenzie Strange (Minot, 81); Sara Anderson (Century, 82); Tegan Graham (Williston, 82); Ava Kalanek (Legacy, 84); Morgan Strange (Minot, 84); Adison Dittus (Minot, 84); Aliyah Iverson (Century, 84); Paige Breuer (Bismarck, 84); Samantha Grasser (Williston, 85); Brooke Hollar (Legacy, 86); and Lauren Beck (Legacy, 86).

Leading the way for the Majettes was Mackenzie Strange, who shot an 81. Morgan Strange (84), Adison Dittus (84), Katie Thomas (89), Karew Lamoureux (95), and Cali Wilson (96) all put forth a strong team performance in front of the home crowd.

“Mackenzie Strange birdied her last two holes, qualifying for the state tournament with an 81.” Foltz continued, “Adison Dittus carded a back nine 81 which included an eagle on a par 5 at No. 16.”

The final team score of 338 for the Majettes marked their second-best score of the 2022 girls’ golf season, as the team keeps eyeing to continue to improve their play with the state tournament drawing closer.

For the Sentinels, Kinzy Welstad finished sixteenth overall, shooting an 87 on the afternoon. Behind Welstad was Emersyn Kopp (93), Ava Landsiedel (95), and Ally Larson (116). The overall score of 391 for the Sentinels was their best of the season, continuing a trend of improved performances with each invitational.

“Freshman Kinzy Welstad became the second Minot North athlete to qualify for a state event by shooting an 87, which was one better than the qualifying number of 88,” Foltz tells The Minot Daily News.

Up next for both teams will be the Williston Invite, which will take place at the Links of North Dakota.
