MSU never trails in opening win, gets split with Minnesota State Moorhead

Minot State 2, Minnesota State-Moorhead 1

MOORHEAD, MN — The Minot State Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 2-1 win against the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons on Tuesday in an NSIC softball doubleheader.

Sophomore Jasmine Blizzard (7-2) got the win out of the bullpen for Minot State (28-16 overall, 9-11 NSIC). The right-hander went four shutout innings, giving up three hits, no walks and striking out five. Senior Trinity Valentine started the ballgame and went three innings, surrendering one run on one hit, walking three and striking out three.

At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Jazmin Karunungan, who went 1-for-1 on the day with two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Freshman Abbey Kelley came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board.

The Beavers then held the Dragons scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Karunungan came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the Beavers lead to 2-0. Minnesota State Moorhead put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still held on for the 2-1 win.

GAME NOTES

– Blizzard struck out five Dragons hitters.

– Minot State’s highest scoring inning were the first and second, when it pushed one run across in each frame.

– Minot State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn’t surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.

– Karunungan stole two bases in Tuesday’s game.

– The Beavers swiped five bases as a team.

– Minot State pitchers limited Minnesota State Moorhead to 0-for-5 hitting with runners in scoring position.

MOORHEAD, MN — The Minot State Beavers put together an admirable effort in the nightcap on Tuesday, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons by the score of 4-2.

Freshman Reegan Floyd (8-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State. Sophomore Jasmine Blizzard was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

Sophomore Brooklyn Morrison led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Sophomore Izzy Penner came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board.

The Dragons then tied the ballgame at one before the Beavers came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Morrison, which brought the Beavers lead to 2-1. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, though, as Minnesota State Moorhead scored three times over the remaining four innings to grab the 4-2 win.
