Lions place second at Badlands Classic

MHS takes 11th Fargo duals

Over the weekend, the Bishop Ryan Lions boys wrestling team competed at the 2022 Badlands Classic in Killdeer and came away with a second place finish.

With a team score of 158, Bishop Ryan placed behind only New Salem-Almont, who totaled 295.5 points to lead the field.

Individually, Drew Zwak (160) was the Lions lone first place finisher as he registered 26 points and won all three of his matches after receiving a first-round bye. He earned a first period pin over Corbyn Strick of Des Lacs-Burlington in the quarterfinals (1:14) and won a 3-0 decision over Brock Norton of New Salem-Almont in the semifinals. In the championship match, Zwak pinned Cody Irwin, also of New Salem-Almont at the 3:48 mark to win his weight class.

Other top competitors from Bishop Ryan included Lane Cooper (126) who placed second and earned 20 points for the Lions. At 195, Connor Harvey also took second and notched 20 points for Bishop Ryan. Coy Okeson (285) was also runner-up in his weight class as he tallied 22 points for the Lions.

Bishop Ryan also produced a trio of third-place finishers at the tournament as Parker Baier (138), Wesley Harvey (152) and Cade Okeson (220) each came away with that distinction.

Meanwhile in Class A wrestling, Minot High competed at the Fargo Metro Duals over the weekend and secured an 11th place overall finish. The Magi recorded a 52-20 win over Grand Forks Central on Friday before falling to West Fargo 43-27 and Bismarck 54-14. On Saturday, Minot recorded wins over Fargo South (78-0), Fargo North (59-15), Fargo Davies (42-21) and Moorhead (66-9).
