Beavers win six straight, down Tetons 6-0

Metcalf nets four goals for MSU

Robert Brewer/MDN MSU forward Justin Metcalf (11) gets in position to score his second goal of the game during Sunday evening’s home contest against Williston State College.

The Minot State Beavers men’s hockey team (20-2-0-0) had a relatively easy time of it on Sunday afternoon as they earned a 6-0 victory over Williston State College at the Maysa Arena.

MSU initially got on the board with a pair of first period goals from senior forward Justin Metcalf. Less than four minutes into the second, the Beavers’ offense struck again as junior forward Jagger Thiessen accounted for the next MSU goal with Reid Arnold and Jordan Robertson both picking up assists on the play. Less than 90 seconds later, Minot State captain Jay Buchholz extended the lead to 4-0 as the route was on.

With 9:18 remaining in the second, Metcalf completed the hat trick with his third score of the evening thanks to assists from Landyn Cochrane and Robertson. He would also add another goal later in the period to give Minot State a 6-0 edge heading into the third.

As it turned out, that would prove to be the final score of the contest. Defensively, MSU freshman goaltender and former Minot High Magician Tre Sortland got his first start of the season in the Beavers’ victory. Next up on the schedule, Minot State plans to travel to the University of Jamestown for its next contest on Wednesday. MSU has won five of its previous six meetings this season against the Jimmies.

In MSU women’s hockey news, the Beavers earned a weekend sweep of Maryville University on the road. On Friday, Minot State won 3-1 and followed up with a 1-0 victory on Saturday. Now 19-4-0-0 on the year, the Beavers plan to host the University of Colorado for a pair of games at the Maysa this Friday and Saturday.
