MHS girls place third at state; boys 10th

Rugby girls win third straight Class B title at Jamestown

On Saturday, the Minot High boys and girls cross-country teams competed in the NDHSAA Class A State Championships at the Parkhurst Recreation Area in Jamestown.

Minot’s girls team earned a third place finish with a point total of 119. They finished behind overall winner Williston (68), followed by second-place Grand Forks Red River (115).

Individually, Jasmyn Mitchner was Minot’s fastest girl as she completed the 5,000 meter race in 19:33, good for seventh overall. Mitchner was followed on the team by Maicee Burke (11th, 19:46), Scout Ulrickson (19th, 19:53), MaLiah Burke (35th, 20:29) and Sophia Lade (47th, 20:51). Williston’s Eleni Lovgren took top individual honors with a time of 18:27.

On the boys side, Minot placed 10th overall with a score of 296. The Williston Coyotes also won in the boys division, pacing the field with a score of 71. Grant Schaeffer’s 40th-place time of 17:22 represented the Magi’s fastest individual time. He was followed by teammates Benjamin Harris (46th, 17:30), Oscar Hultz (59th, 17:46), Nolan Howey (69th, 17:56) and Cooper Fjeld (82nd, 18:08). Aiden Johnson of West Fargo Sheyenne was the individual winner as he clocked in at 15:34.

Meanwhile in Class B action on Friday, the Rugby girls squad won it all at Jamestown, marking the third straight year the Panthers have won the state cross-country championship. Rugby posted a team score of 112, beating runner-up Kindred by a margin of 36 points.

The Panthers had three runners – Amelia Shepard (2nd, 19:40.75), Hannah Senechal (8th, 20:11.58) and Brooklyn Bartsch (13th, 20:31.92) – earn All-State honors with top-20 individual finishes.

Also of note on the girls side, Des Lacs/Burlington eighth-grader Brynn Hanson took home individual medalist honors with a time of 19:25.35. Hanson was the No. 1-ranked Class B girls runner in the final North Dakota Cross Country Coaches Poll of the season released on October 13.

In boys Class B news Friday, the Bowman County Bulldogs won their second consecutive state title as they paced the field with a score of 58. The state title was the 17th in program history for Bowman.

Four Bulldog runners – Austin Wanner (4th, 16:39.36), Caleb Sarsland (7th, 16:54.43), Taylor Wanner (11th, 17:05.67) and Gavin Scott (14th, 17:15.79) – finished in the top 20. Ian Busche of Beulah/Hazen was the overall winner with a time of 16:23.
