UND tabs Amendt to lead women’s golf program

Bringing more than 10 years of coaching and teaching experience, as well as a professional golfing background, the University of North Dakota announced Travis Amendt as its new head women’s golf coach on Friday, July 30.

Amendt comes to UND after a year at Mount Saint Mary’s and three years at former Big Sky Conference foe Montana State followed by a stint at Pebble Beach Golf Course.

“We are excited to bring Travis aboard to UND. His past experiences in collegiate golf as well as his teaching acumen will be a tremendous benefit for our women’s golf program,” said director of athletics Bill Chaves. “I would like to thank Erik Martinson, associate athletic director and golf administrator, for leading an excellent search that yielded an excellent coach.”

Amendt comes to North Dakota after spending a year as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s programs at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md. He helped both Mountaineer programs record a top-15 finisher at the Northeast Conference Championship, including Second Team All-NEC golfer Nacho Gomez with the men’s program. He most recently served as a Course Onboarding Associate at Pebble Beach Golf Course, the host course of seven major championships.

Before his time at The Mount, Amendt coached three seasons at Montana State with the women’s program, where he served as an assistant coach. During his first season in 2017-18, the Bobcats recorded their first individual tournament victory in five years when Kelly Cooper won the Grand Canyon Invitational. MSU also placed sixth at the Big Sky Championship in 2019 to record the program’s best finish at the championship since 2015.

Prior to starting his college coaching career, Amendt spent four years as the assistant golf professional/director of Instruction at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, California, where he also worked with the Beaumont Elite Golf Academy, helping develop international students and preparing them for collegiate golf. He also served in similar golf pro capacities in Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Amendt also spent time as a professional golfer on various mini-tours, including the Golden State Tour, Pepsi Tour, SCPGA, and Open events in Arizona and California. He has also been affiliated with the Symetra Tour, Canadian Tour, and U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying events.

Amendt trained at the Golf Academy of America in Chandler, Ariz., and is a Class “A” instructor. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University and recently completed a master’s degree in sport management from Arkansas State University.
