Tauros make it two in a row over Bismarck

Following an exhilarating finish in a 4-3 victory over the visiting Bismarck Bobcats on Friday, the Minot Minotauros again defeated Bismarck, this time 4-1 on Saturday night at the VFW Sports Center.

The Tauros wasted no time getting their offense going as forward Tyler Kostelechy notched his eighth goal of the year at the 50-second mark of the first period. He was assisted on the play by fellow forward Jay Buchholz.

In the second, Minot added two more goals. At the 12:39 mark, forward Blaine Warnert scored his second goal in as many nights on a short-handed opportunity. His fourth goal of the year, Warnert was assisted by Isaac Keller as the Tauros jumped out ahead 2-0.

Less than 90 seconds later, it was Cade Stibbe who provided Minot’s third goal of the contest. His eighth of the season, the forward was assisted on the play by Kostelecky and Jay Buchholz. Following a third period score by Bismarck, Kostelecky added an empty netter with less than two minutes remaining in the game to salt away the victory.

Kostelecky and Buchholz accounted for three points each, and Stibbe added two points for the Tauros. Meanwhile, Minot netminder Keenan Rancier stopped 24 of 25 shots on goal that evening.

Currently occupying third place in the NAHL Central Division with a record of 15-15-4-1, Minot will now have the difficult task of beginning a three-game series with the first-place Aberdeen Wings on Wednesday. The Tauros plan to come home to the Maysa to face Aberdeen on Friday night, and then will conclude the series on the road Saturday night. Aberdeen has won all five of its games against Minot so far this year.

MSU beats UMary 4-1

In men’s hockey over the weekend, Minot State (23-2-2) defeated the University of Mary at the Maysa Arena on Saturday 4-1. In the process, MSU extends its unbeaten streak to 15.

After a scoreless first period, the Beavers posted three goals in the second as Landyn Cochrane, Adam Wowryk and Carter Barley each found the back of the Marauders net. For good measure, a Davis Sheldon goal in the final period helped put the game away.

Next up on the schedule, MSU plans to host Jamestown at the Maysa on Thursday. Start time for that game is slated for 7 p.m.
