MSU recap: Men’s hockey sweeps Jimmies

NSIC Basketball Tournament begins Friday

Over the weekend, the Minot State men’s hockey team completed a two-game sweep of Jamestown, defeating the Jimmies 1-0 on Saturday. Eric Soars scored a late goal to conclude matters in the Beavers victory.

On Friday, it was Minot State who prevailed in overtime against Jamestown 3-2. In that game, it was Paul O’Connor game clinching goal in the extra period which proved to be the difference. Now winners of nine straight, MSU plans to host Bottineau on Wednesday at the Maysa Arena at 7 p.m.

In basketball, the men’s team concluded its regular season with a two-game sweep of St. Mary’s, beating the Marauders 71-65 in Bismarck on Saturday.

MSU’s Cody Max led the way with a team-high 24 points, nine assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals. Meanwhile, Melvin Newbern made his presence felt with 14 points and 14 boards in the win.

Ending the regular season with an 8-6 record, Minot State earned the third seed in the North Division of the NSIC Tournament and will face Upper Iowa on Friday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

On the women’s side, Minot State suffered its second consecutive loss to UMary on Saturday at home, losing to the Marauders 73-67. Amber Stevahn had another strong individual game, posting 18 points on 9-of-15 from the field, and also adding seven boards three assists and three steals.

Finishing up the year with an overall mark of 4-10, the MSU women’s squad will be the third seed in the South Division of the NSIC Tournament, and will take on Concordia-St. Paul in the opening round on Friday in South Dakota.

In softball, the Beavers won a pair of games, defeating Northern University 2-0 on Saturday, and taking care of Bemidji State 9-0 on Sunday.

Trinity Valentine (3-1) was the winning pitcher in Saturday’s contest, tossing a complete game and allowing six hits and two walks while striking out eight in the shutout victory. Meanwhile, MSU’s offense accounted for seven hits. First baseman Jamie Odlum went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in, and outfielder Lauryn DeGuzman went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Against Bemidji State, Valentine earned her fourth win of the year, throwing three innings of no-hit ball while striking out three. The Beavers offense totaled 12 hits on the afternoon, and Odlum led the way with a 3-for-4 outing which included a pair of RBIs and three runs scored.

With a record of 7-1, MSU is scheduled to travel to Southwest Minnesota State for a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 26.

In track news on Saturday, several Beavers excelled at the Black Hills State University Stinger Open; the final meet before the NSIC Championships begin on Feb. 26-27 in Mankato, Minnesota.

Whitney Hanson earned provisional qualification for the NCAA Championships with a time of 2:15.96 in the 800 meters as she finished first in the event and set a Division II school and all-time record in the process. Meanwhile, Logan Krueger earned a provisional qualification spot for the NCAA Championships in the weight throw with a toss of 17.93 meters to finish first in the event.

Breanna Johns-Oster added to MSU’s success as she set a new school record in the women’s weight throw with a distance of 16.22 meters to finish second on Friday. In addition, Nathan Trujillo-Aragon won the 60 meter hurdles and recorded a time of 8.47 to mark the fastest in Division II program history.
