ORCS moves to 9-2 with win over Bishop Ryan, 59-51

After several ties and lead changes, it was Our Redeemer’s Christian School who came out victorious in a scrappy showdown against Bishop Ryan Thursday evening.

In the first quarter, Our Redeemer’s got off to a fast start and took a 14-5 lead after eight minutes of play. In the second however, it was Bishop Ryan who controlled the tempo of contest. The Lions utilized success from the perimeter, as well as some rugged defense to close the gap. A jumper from forward Sydney Upton got the Lions to within two points with just over five minutes remaining before the half at 19-17. Minutes later, a Nora Kramer three gave Bishop Ryan its first lead of the period at 22-19. Bishop Ryan led by as many as four and took a slight 32-30 edge into the halftime break.

At the start of the second half, Upton and Kramer were major catalysts in a 6-0 run by Bishop Ryan. The Lions eventually built an eight-point lead, but Our Redeemer’s would not relent. A wing three pointer from freshman guard Meadow Roberts with less than three minutes remaining in the period cut the Bishop Ryan lead to 40-39. The Knights went on to take a brief 41-40 lead, but Bishop Ryan ended the quarter with a pair of baskets to take a 44-41 lead after three.

The final quarter featured yet another momentum shift as Our Redeemer’s began the period on a 12-5 run to take a 53-49 advantage. With less than three minutes remaining, a jumper from Knights sophomore Megan Swenson extended the lead to 55-49. About a minute later, Roberts found an open Aubrey Griedl underneath the basket for a layup which gave the home Knights an insurmountable eight point lead.

By game’s end, Mya Vibeto led all scorers with 17 points for the Knights. Meanwhile, Upton posted 13 points in defeat for Bishop Ryan. Our Redeemer’s is scheduled to play Westhope-Newburg in its next game on the road this Saturday. Meanwhile, Bishop Ryan, now 5-5 on the season, is scheduled to travel to Rugby for its next game on Friday.
