Men beat Golden Eagles on road 72-61

In local college sports, both Minot State basketball teams earned victories over Minnesota Crookston on Friday. While the women’s team (1-4, 1-2) defended its home court with a 76-45 triumph over the Golden Eagles, the MSU men’s squad (3-4, 1-2) stopped its two-game losing skid with a 72-61 win over Minnesota Crookston on the road.

In the women’s contest, Minot State built a 15 point lead to end the first period, and outscored Minnesota in every subsequent quarter to cruise to victory. Three Beaver players reached double-figure scoring totals with Amber Stevahn leading all scorers with 18. Lucy Chapman and Anna Counts chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Meanwhile in the men’s game, redshirt junior Sam Ohlrich notched a career-high with 20 points, and also contributed defensively with a pair of blocks to lead the Beavers to victory. Senior Max Cody also made his presence felt with 17 points and four assists in the win, and Melvin Newbern recorded his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 points.

Both MSU clubs will wrap up their two-game sets with Minnesota on Saturday. While the men’s team is scheduled to start its game at 1:30 p.m. on the road, the women’s matchup is slated for a 2 p.m. start time at the Minot State Dome.
