Beavers track and field take third at UMary Winter Carnival

On Saturday, the Minot State University track and field team started the 2021 season with a third-place finish (196 total points) at the UMary Winter Carnival. While the women finished third in the meet with 90 total points, the men took fourth with 106 total points.

MSU junior Leif Nelson set a Division II program record in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.93 meters (6’4”) and winning the event on Saturday in Bismarck, North Dakota. Meanwhile, Nathan Trujillo-Aragon continues to climb up the program rankings as he moves into fifth on the DII-era list for the Beavers with a 3rd-place finish in the men’s 60 meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.88 seconds.

In the shot put, Logan Krueger posted the second-best throw in the competition at 14.22 meters. Corbin Harris tossed 13.40 for a seventh-place finish and Kreins placed eighth with a toss of 12.99. Harris and Kreins are now No. 2 and No. 3 on the D-II era program list with those distances.

From there, Hunter Clark finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.53 meters. That mark helped him maintain a No. 7 D-II era top-10 spot.

Joseph Green took fourth in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 54.24 seconds. In the men’s 600 meters, Vincente Guereca also earned fourth with a time of 1:33.76. Guereca moves to No. 6 on the Beavers’ D-II era top-10 list. Meanwhile, Jacob Jensen finished second in the men’s 3000 meters with a time of 8:50.27, and remains third on the D-II era top-10 list for the Beavers.

The Beavers also got in the win column with Breanna Johns-Oster’s first collegiate victory following a weight throw of 14.71 meters to beat out teammate and second-place finisher, Tori Nygard for the top spot in the weight throw finals. Meanwhile, fellow Beaver Peyton Lammerding finished fourth in her first collegiate meet with a throw of 14.04 meters.

In the women’s mile, MSU produced two top-10 finishers as Jessica Martinez took second with a time of 5:38.74. Elizabeth Holzer finished eighth as she clocked a 5:55.07 marking.

Emily Hansen grabbed a second-place finish in the women’s 600 as she clocked a time of 1:50.09. That performance moves Hansen up to the No. 6 spot on the D-II era top-10 list for MSU women’s track and field.

Other MSU highlights included Johns-Oster taking the podium for the second time on the day, finishing third in the shot put with a No. 2 distance in the D-II era for the school (12.36 meters). Meanwhile, Lammerding placed fifth with a toss of 11 meters, and Chloe Gunderson earned seventh with a shot put of 9.89 meters. These performances put Johns-Oster, Lammerding, Gunderson all in the top-10 in the D-II era of the Minot State women’s throws team.

The Beavers plan to be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Myrle Hanson Open in Spearfish, South Dakota. The event will be hosted by Black Hills State University.
