Majettes swim & dive tops Mandan

MANDAN — The Minot High School swim and dive team beat Mandan with a final score of 141-45 on Friday at the Mandan Aquatic Center.

The Majettes placed first in all 12 events despite some fatigue.

“We were a little tired today,” MHS head swim coach Emily Jensen said. “We’ve had three meets in seven days and the energy looked a little draining today.”

Jensen mentioned Reese Goodman, praising her performance.

“Reese had a great split on the 400 relay for us,” she said. “That ended our meet on a high for sure. She was moved into the ‘A’ relay after we did some rearranging with athletes… It was so fun to watch her behind the block. She really rose to the occasion. She’s a serious kid. At the pool, she often doesn’t show her emotions.”

That particular meet was an exception for the young swimmer. During the 400 yard freestyle relay, her individual time was 58.49 seconds.

“We showed her her split and she just started beaming,” Jensen continued. “Hopefully this feeds her confidence a little moving forward.”

Her other teammates in the relay were Sam VonBokern (59.74), Elise Altringer (59.34), and Payton Luzardo (58.10). Combining those scores, they won that event with a time of 3:55.67.

“Elise Altringer had some good races today,” Jensen said. “She split out her 200 so nice, but we talked and she didn’t set the tone early enough in the first 50 yards of her 200.”

By recognizing what she could do better, Altringer “knew she needed to get out with a little more aggression and she seemed to capitalize that.”

A third swimmer was recognized by the coach, as well.

“Caelin Flaten’s backstroke was great tonight,” Jensen said. “She was so close to that state cut.”

In the future, Jensen said it would be big for them to get another athlete in that particular event.

The Minot High swim and dive team will be at a home meet at 5 p.m. on Sept. 25.
