Majettes golf places third in regular-season home meet

Alex Eisen/MDN Minot High senior Savanah Brintnell putts the ball Friday morning at the Vardon Golf Club in Minot. She shot an 89.

After shooting a team score of 380 in each of the past two meets to finish in seventh and eighth place, respectively, the Minot High School girls golf team needed a home course advantage to get back on track.

The Majettes trimmed off 28 shots for a 352 team score on Friday at the Vardon Golf Club in Minot. The display was good enough to climb the leaderboard and grab a third-place finish.

“We rallied after a good week of practice,” MHS head coach Scott Foltz said. “We realized that we aren’t a seventh or eighth-place team. So, really pleased with our performance today.”

The Minot Invite was won by Mandan (344) ahead of Bismarck Century (345). Medalist honors went to Hannah Herbal from Century with a 74. Herbel has won all six WDA meets so far this season.

Bella Dobrinski, a senior, led the Majettes with an 83.

Alex Eisen/MDN MHS junior Addison Sorenson tees off during the Minot Invite held Friday at the Vardon Golf Club.

“I have been really working on my short game because that has been difficult for me this season,” Dobrinski said. “Working on my putting and chipping, and I brought that into my game today. I was getting up-and-down and two-putting in regulation. So, that helped me stay low today.”

Hole No. 14 exemplified Dobrinski’s round as she escaped an unpleasant situation with a birdie.

“I hit a drive pretty right and dropped it behind the porta-potty,” she explained. “I got on and put it in for a birdie.”

Minot senior Savanah Brintnell was on pace to match Dobrinski’s score but struggled down the stretch. She finished with an 89.

“On the front, I got a 44 but could have done better,” Brintnell said. “Then, on the back, I was doing well until the last two holes. I got a double and then a triple (bogey). But, up to that point, I was only four (shots) over. I guess that’s how it goes. It’s golf.”

A pair of 90s by junior Addison Sorenson and senior Taryn Trueblood rounded out Minot’s team score.

“They both kind of righted their ship,” Foltz said about Sorenson and Trueblood. “They have been struggling a bit lately. But, they put in a lot of time this last week. I think they just decided they could shoot better, and they both did.”

Also golfing for the Minot varsity team was MacKenzie Strange (91) and Avery Falcon (99). Plus, unaffiliated Cali Wilson (87) and Sydni Gartner (92).

“I’m excited,” Foltz said. “I think we got this ship going in the right direction again.”

The Majettes will wrap up the regular season today with the Williston Invite at the Links of North Dakota in Ray.

Minot will then host the WDA Regional Meet on Monday, Sept. 28, and the Class A State Meet on Oct. 5-6. Both postseason competitions will be played at the Souris Valley Golf Course.
